So this weekend is Easter, and of course we are blogging about an Easter Wine Pairing. However before we get onto the food and drink, here’s a quick reminder of the Easter Story.
The Easter Story
Easter is the most important festival in the Christian calendar. It celebrates the resurrection from the dead of Jesus, three days after he was executed. The Easter story is at the heart of Christianity. Easter Sunday is the day that marks Jesus’ resurrection.
After Jesus was crucified on the Friday (known as Good Friday), his body was taken down from the cross, and buried in a cave tomb. The tomb was guarded by Roman Soldiers and an enormous stone was put over the entrance, so that no-one could steal the body.
On the Sunday, Mary Magdalene, followed later by some of Jesus’ disciples visited the tomb and found that the stone had been moved, and that Jesus’ body had gone.
Jesus himself was seen that day by Mary and the disciples, and for forty days afterwards by many people. His followers realised that God had raised Jesus from the dead. Christians call this the Resurrection.
Why do we have Easter eggs at Easter?
An egg is a symbol of new life. For Christians, Easter eggs are used as a symbol of the resurrection of Jesus.
Christians believe that, through his resurrection, Jesus overcame death and sin and offers people the promise of eternal life if they follow his teachings.
In England Easter eggs are available in abundance with offerings from all your favourite chocolate manufacturers.
Easter Wine Pairing with Chocolate
We have discussed in a few blogs over the years food and wine pairing and it still is as simple as we have always said, if the food is sweeter the wine needs to be as sweet, or if you like your wines to stay really sweet, then even sweeter. This week, on the WSET Level 2 course some of the students brought some nibbles to try with the wines, I brought chocolates because we were doing the sweet wines. There is a mixed reaction to the sweet Sherry NV Colosia Pedro Ximenez Jerez DO available from Fareham Wine Cellar via this link. Some found it just too sweet, but I won a few over with the chocolate pairing – still too sweet for a few though. Me, I thought it was delicious!
