Each month Erica interviews a former student of Enjoy Discovering Wine. This month’s WSET interview is with Level 1 in Wines student, Anna Wallis.
When you signed you for the Level 1 Award in wine what did you want to have happen?
WSET Level 1 – a lot to learn
Joining the world’s second largest producer of Champagne’s communications team last year [Vranken Pommery Monopole] was a huge honour, but I had a lot to learn. I’d watched wine tastings and demos but lacked that depth of knowledge that comes from actually learning for myself why wines are different. The first rung of the ladder was to do a WSET Level 1 simply to break down the jargon and to understand the basics.
Helen’s teaching style was clear and fun, and whilst there seemed a great deal of information to take in from the start, we got through it and by the end, everything came together in time for us to sit our test. I wanted to enjoy the information, process the facts as well as take it seriously. This was all doable.
WSET Level 1 – confidence to retain information
We were taught in the morning sessions about the main types and styles of wines available, how to store them and serve them. There were also some health and safety aspects to learn as well as the food and wine pairing information. It was fairly straightforward and much of it was common sense, but having not had to set a test for 20 years, it was my confidence to retain the information that was the biggest challenge!
WSET Level 1 – the achievement
The test at the end of the day was multiple choice and I was delighted to say that having enjoyed the teaching session in our small group, most of the answers came to me fairly quickly. I was so pleased to receive my certificate a few weeks later and even though it was only WSET Level 1, the achievement gave me a great boost.
WSET Level 1 – recommendation!
I would recommend this course to anyone interested in learning more about wine whether they are in the business or not.
